James "Jimbo" DeVitt actually began his racing career more than 16 years ago. But prior to actually strapping in behind the wheel of his own race car, his love of racing began when he was just 8 years old. Each week he and his father, Floyd W. DeVitt would venture to Mobile International Speedway to watch Saturday Night racing legends like Gene Tapia, Flying Phil Wendt, Wayne Niedecken, Sr. & Ray Putnam. And with his Uncle,Joe Burton, serving as crew chief for the infamous Charles "Rat" Lane a.k.a. The Super Mouse, he was drawn in even more. In his early teens, the Bobby Garrison/Gerald Wilkerson rivalry was at its peak. Jimbo and his Dad sided with the Barnett Grading and Paving #62 Late Model driven by none other than Bobby Garrison and became huge fans. On a chance encounter, Jimbo had the opportunity to visit the Barnett race shop where he not only saw the #62 car, but also had the privilege of meeting his idol, Bobby Garrison for the first time. That same day he also met the owner Charles Calvin "Coolie" Barnett and his son Charley Barnett who served as the crew chief. Jimbo was so in awe of their operation that he managed to visit the shop on a regular basis. Eventually, Charley recognized Jimbo's interest in racing and discovered he also had a keen mechanical ability. Jimbo began working on Bobby's car at the age of 16. And from there the rest is history! Some 12 years later, Jimbo served as Bobby Garrison's crew chief on the A.L. Reed Construction #22 Late Model. Alot of things have changed since the beginning, but through it all, one thing has remained the same--Jimbo's love of short track racing on Saturday nights! |

Did you know that the paint scheme currently seen on the #16 Super Stock of Jimbo DeVitt is a tribute to the 1984 National Auto Super Stars Snowball Derby Champion, Butch Lindley? When building the new car, Jimbo decided to reflect the same colors and pattern of the original Lindley car.

You have to start somewhere! Late August of 1994 marked the Rookie Year for Jimbo. This picture was taken on the first night he ever raced at Mobile International Speedway. Jimbo raced just 4 races that year and finished just 1. However, he finished that race in 1st place!
Our 1995 Pure Stock Champion! In '95, Jimbo was fast qualifier more than 12 times that year and only qualified outside of the top 2 ONCE!
The 1995 Car. This picture shows one of that seasons feature wins, with our driver on the way to his track championship!
The 1996 Car. Just after breaking the track record that still stands today on a 7 inch tire!
The 1997 Car on it's first night after the '96 car was destroyed mid-year the previous season.
In 1998, DeVitt Motorsports combined racing efforts with the Barnett Racing Team. Our #16 temporarily became a #62. Jimbo's teammate that year was Bobby Garrison, who drove the #62 Late Model.
In 1999, the Barnett/DeVitt Motorsports #62 was changed back into the #16 of years past. A.L. Reed Construction continued on as our primary sponsor and we are glad to say that we've been together ever since. Without the support of Mr. William F. Reed and his family, the #16 would have left the track years ago.
Which brings us back to the 2005 car. Each week, Jimbo and the crew work diligently to keep the #16 in top shape, looking for the magic of 15 years ago when he won the track championship. (Photo by Gerald Hodges) |
